The Great Redwood Forest:
Permanent Protection of Local Jobs, the Environment
and Our Way of Life
Few bankruptcies are an opportunity to anyone but debt collectors, but this one offers a chance to create community stability for Humboldt County’s future by providing a permanent balance between jobs and environmental protection.
Maxxam Corporation’s financial troubles mean a new owner for Pacific Lumber (PL) Company timberlands. While we can’t determine the owner, we can shape the future of this integral economic and environmental resource by urging any future owner of the timberlands to permanently protect local jobs and the environment for future generations.
The Great Redwood Forest
The Great Redwood Forest is a vision of permanent protection that will provide local timber jobs for current and future generations, as well as a community ownership stake to promote sustainable forest management. Permanent protection of our local timber traditions on PL lands and a continuous timber supply to the mills through sustainable forest management means protected old-growth forests, endangered species habitat, clean water sources, as well as preventing future real estate development, so that local timber jobs and a healthy environment are part of our community forever.
